Frequently Asked Questions from Parents

In addition to the questions answered below, another great resource for parents is located at www.jointke.org. Be sure to check out the parent's section of that site also.

Living conditions in fraternity houses are usually pretty poor. What is the TKE house like?
The Beta-Beta chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon has an extensive and involved alumni backing that has helped fund the building of our new 3.2 million dollar house on Greek Way. The TKE house is easily the nicest residence of any social fraternity at NC State. We invite any prospective members or current families of active brothers to come view the house at any time. Each brother is responsible for individual duties of cleaning and maintenance. The Vice-President of the fraternity monitors these duties very closely. The house also has a kitchen manager that cooks and serves meals for the brothers. Overall, we live in a very new and clean house that we have all come to enjoy.

I’m concerned about hazing and the stuff I've seen on Animal House.
We believe that hazing is a direct antithesis of what fraternity should stand for. Our pledge process is a very open and shut educational process that pushes new candidates to learn about our fraternity, gain new organizational abilities, build bonds between new friends among their pledge class, and to educate them as men. We do not believe that hazing candidates promotes a positive learning process and thus it does not take place.

Why is a fraternity important to the college career?
Some of the most prominent members of society today were once members of a fraternity or a sorority. Greek organizations get the reputations of being ‘clicky’ or ‘popular’ however Greek organizations get this only because they encourage their members to do well and get involved in campus organizations. Tau Kappa Epsilon promotes qualities in young men that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. A fraternity is an adventure in group living and as such offers a chance for college men to grow in more beneficial ways than they would living in dorms and not being motivated by their peers.

What does TKE do to be involved as far as the campus Greek community goes?
TKE is proud to say that we involve ourselves on a regular basis with IFC (Interfraternity Council) and Greek Life. TKE participates in all the campus fundraisers, freshman move-in, Greek Week, and IFC Council. Tim Parry, a distinguished brother, has served 2 years on the IFC Executive Council, as well as Jeff Skalka who served as IFC President and President of the All Greek Council. Other brothers also continuously seek to serve on the IFC Judicial committee.
